Math Placement Process

Each year, every student coming into Franklin Avenue Middle School is evaluated based on multiple criteria consisting of both subjective and objective items.  This data is compiled into a rubric for each student and is used to determine the appropriate placement for the study of mathematics.  While we feel that each students needs to be challenged, we also strongly believe that this information is important in placing the students in the most appropriate level and where they will be most successful based on their past performance.
 
Each section of the rubric is given a score of 1-6 depending on performance and criteria.  The total rubric score is calculated and the appropriate placement is made for each student.  Also, depending on grade level the following criteria is utilized:
 
  • LinkIt! Benchmark Assessment
  • Skills Readiness Assessment
  • NJSLA Score
  • CogAT Score
  • IOWA Algebra Assessment Score
  • Mathematics Grade
  • Student Work Habits Score
 
 
Grade 6 Courses
  • Math 6
  • Math 6 Advanced
 
Grade 7 Courses
  • Math 7
  • Math 7 Advanced
  • Algebra 7
 
Grade 8 Courses
  • Math 8
  • Algebra 8
  • Geometry 8
 
 
A detailed rubric can be viewed for each grade level.  *In order for a student to be considered for advanced placement in math, they must score the required points on this placement rubric.  No student is placed into a higher level of math without the required score.
